Programs for Scout Groups


The Lehigh Valley Zoo offers both scheduled programs and customized private programs for scout groups. Customized programs require a minimum of 15 participants (you can sign up with fewer than 15, but you must pay for at least 15). We can design and tailor our programs to satisfy any of the following requirements:

Girl Scout Badges:
Pet Care, Earth Connections, Eco-Action, Plants and Animals, Wildlife, Your Outdoor Surroundings

Brownie Try-its:
Animals, Earth and Sky, Eco-Explorer, Outdoor Adventurer, Watching Wildlife, Water Everywhere

Cub Scout Requirements:
Academics pin, Webelos Naturalist pin, Belt Loop requirements (Natural Resources, Food Chains, Endangered Species), Environmental Service Projects, Wolf requirements (Birds elective 13, Wildlife Conservation Officer Talk), Tiger requirements (Poisonous Plants and Venomous Animals, Learn About an Animal, Natural Resources, Food Chain, Endangered and Extinct Species, Visit a Zoo, etc)

The Lehigh Valley Zoo is a great place to host Jamborees and Camporees, Blue and Gold Banquets or other special events! Scouts can do numerous projects for the Zoo to earn their Eagle, Gold, and Silver awards. We also offer guided Zoo tours, guided nature hikes, creek studies, and more!

**All scheduled events require pre-registration. Due to the nature of the programs, we cannot accomodate any individuals or groups who do not register in advance. Please contact an educator in the Education Office at 610-799-4171 for more information or to pre-register. **

2009 Boy Scout Events:

Boy Scout Environmental Science Merit Badge

Saturdays, November 7, 14, 21 and December 5, 2009 9:00AM - 11:00AM
$40 per participant

  This course is action packed with 11 projects. Some of the projects will take place at the Zoo; other projects need to be done on the scout's own time. This course is a combination of guided activities and independent work. Course adheres to BSA requriements.

 

Boy Scout Combined Merit Badge Event

Saturday, December 12, 2009, 9:00AM - 2:00PM
$13.50 per participant

  This course will meet some requirements for the Bird Study, Insect Sudy, and Reptile Study merit badges. Course adheres to BSA requirements.

Cub Scout Naturalist Pin and Forester Pin Event - offered in Spring and Fall

Naturalist: Webelos will fulfill pin requirements 3,6,7 and 8. Participants will learn about the many ways that the balance of nature is affected on a daily basis. They will also learn about the many things that can be done to ensure respect for nature. Webelos will be asked to compare and contrast the wild animals from the Nature Hike to the wild animals at the Zoo and explain why zoos are so important to ensure the survival of certain animal species.

Forester: Webelos will fulfill pin requirements 2,3,4 and 6. Learn how to identify trees and flowers common to the area as well as how both wildlife and humans use them. Examine the growth rings of a tree stump and learn how the rings tell its life history. Conservation Education staff will present an Animal Encounter featuring forest animals and a customized Zoo Tour highlighting our forest animals from around the world.

 
Combined Cub Event

  Tigers, Bears and Wolves! Everyone works toward a pin, a bead or a belt loop! Event includes: animal presentations, nature hikes, a conservation message, ecology and outdoor skills.

  Explore the Animal Kingdom - learn how to safely enjoy wildlife, how animals move, how animals' bodies affect they way the live and how animals communicate. Patch provided upon completion.

  Explore water - learn about the importance of water, its layers and everything it's a part of. Find out how to conserve water and search a stream for aquatic plants and animals. Patch provided upon completion.

  Explore nature and learn what all animals need in a habitat to survive. Ecology is the study of how plants and animals live together in the environment. Create your own habitat and learn about food chains, endangered species and what you can do to help wildlife. Patch provided upon completion.

Outdoor Creativity

  The beauty and diversity of nature has inspired artists of all ages. take an enchanting hike with our Conservation Educators to explore nature in a new light and become inspired to create your own art. Come prepared with a traditional legend to share with everyone in the forest. Badge provided upon completion.

 

Plants and Animals

  Our Conservation Educators will take you on a safari and share expertise about working with animals. You will learn how to grow your own greenery, which plants are pleasant and which are pests, and how to create your very own artwork made of seeds. Badge provided upon completion.

 

Wildlife

  Explore wildlife with our Conservation Educators as they share their wildlife secrets with you. Learn which plants are poisonous, how to identify and categorize wildlife and all about Pennsylvania's state wildlife symbols. Badge provided upon completion.

 

Eco Action

  Every person can make a difference! Learn how to protect wildlife and the environment. Spread the word to save the planet. Our Conservation Educators will show you how to reduce, reuse and recycle in a fun way. Badge provided upon completion.
