Emu
Dromaius novaehollandiae

Habitat: Emus live throughout Australia in many different habitats; they tend to avoid dense forest and severe desert areas

Diet: Grains, flowers, berries, soft shoots, insects, grubs, and will even eat stones to help with digestion

Reproduction: Emus breed from April to July. They lay nine to eleven large, olive green eggs on average. The male builds the nest and incubates the eggs. The young reach sexual maturity at 2 years.
Physical Description: The emu is the second largest bird on earth. They are 1.75m tall on average. They are large, flightless birds with a shaggy appearance. Emus have three toes. They have long necks and legs, but tiny vestigial wings. They have dark brown plumage, but the sun fades the pigments over time.
Behavior: Emus move across Australia in search of food. Because emu food becomes plentiful after rainfall, emus are commonly tracked to areas that have recently experienced a rainfall. Emus are limited to one location only when the male is incubating eggs. They move freely at all other times.

Conservation Status: Common

Fun Facts:

Emus are Australia’s largest bird, standing six feet tall and weighing up to 120 pounds.
Their double plume feathers allow them to stay cool during extreme temperatures of up to 120 degrees Fahrenheit, while also keeping them warm during colder weather.
Emus are a member of the flightless bird family called ratites. So, don’t look for these birds in the sky because they don’t fly!
