Falco sparverius

Habitat: Open woods, orchards, fields, cities and parks. Lives throughout entire United States, Southern Alaska, British Columbia, Great Lakes, New England, and American tropics.

Diet: Carnivore; insects (crickets and grasshoppers), birds (mainly house sparrows) and rodents. Prey is captured on the ground unlike other falcons, which catch prey in midair.

Reproduction: Will nest in tree cavities, abandoned woodpecker holes, old buildings and nesting sites of other birds of prey. Lays 3-5 white, creamy, pink or pale buff dotted brown eggs, which the female incubates for 29-30 days. The male will feed the female during and shortly after incubation. The young will stay with adults after fledging.

Physical Description: Also known as the Sparrow Hawk. Is the smallest and most common falcon. Have red head caps, backs and tails with a black and white face pattern. Males have blue-gray wings while females have brown wings. Voice is a shrill killy killy killy. Has adapted readily to humans and nests in large cities throughout the U.S. Flight pattern erratic and buoyant. Flap, Flap, Flap , Glide. With rapid wing beats, can hover over an area in search of prey.
