Lehigh Valley Zoo’s programs for educators are focused on empowering educators with a strong foundation in ecological literacy, skills in inquiry-based learning and principles of field investigation. Our professional development programs provide educators with necessary knowledge, skills and resources to bring meaningful environmental and sustainability education to their students or other audiences and ideas applicable to the classroom. All program activities and materials provided are designed to support Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors to address national standards for inquiry-based science learning.
Butterfly Workshop
This is an interdisciplinary program that connects educators to their students while focusing on the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content. Educators will learn how to identify the milkweed plant and learn the importance of conservation. In addition educators will learn the vital importance of protecting the habitat in order for the Monarch numbers to flourish. This workshop will include hands-on activities. Participants should dress accordingly for the outdoor activities. Activities are aligned with the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content.

Ecosystems, Wildlife and Conservation
Lehigh Valley Zoo’s Education Staff is offering this interdisciplinary program designed to introduce educators to a wide variety of hands-on activities that encourages curiosity in learning about our natural world. The programs emphasis is on wildlife because of its intrinsic and ecological values but also focuses on the natural world that they depend on to survive. Participants will learn innovative teaching strategies and how best to use the Zoo as a learning resource for students and teachers. Activities are aligned with the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content.

Penguin Awareness
Participants will be actively involved with hands-on lessons relating to the natural history of the African penguins, penguin adaptations, diet needs, and habitat preferences. Participants will learn about animal species that are labeled as endangered, threatened, extinct, and at risk. Learn how regulations and environmental law play a vital role in protecting species like African penguins from extinction. Activities are aligned with the Pennsylvania Assessment Anchors and Eligible Content.
Workshop participants will meet Sheri Peters, Director of Conservation Education and Education Advisor for the African Penguin Species Survival Program. As a member of the African Penguin SSP, Sheri is dedicated to helping this international task force meet their goals of saving African Penguin populations from further decline. Education Advisors play a critical role in and serve as consultants within Animal Programs, such as Species Survival Plans, for topics and issues related to conservation education, community outreach, and public awareness. “The mission of the African penguin SSP is to oversee the cooperative population management of Spheniscus demersus in AZA zoos and aquariums and to enhance, strengthen, and support the conservation efforts for this species in South Africa and Namibia.
